Falcons vs Broncos Live

The outcome of the Thursday’s 2019 NFL Hall of Fame Game won’t affect either team’s Super Bowl hopes, but the game itself means the NFL season is officially here. And it means something for those who have been waiting since February to put down a wager on NFL action. The Denver Broncos take on the Atlanta Falcons at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, with kickoff scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. It’s the fourth Hall of Fame Game appearance for both teams. Each team is 1-2, but neither has been to Canton lately. In fact, the Broncos’ last trip was in 2004, while the Falcons last appeared in 1994. Denver is favored by 2.5 in the latest Falcons vs. Broncos odds, a big move from the opening line of Atlanta -2.5. The over-under for total points scored has remained steady at 34. The last seven Hall of Fame Games have averaged 30.3 points, but six have had at least 23 put on the scoreboard. Substitutions come at a fever pitch for Week 1 of the NFL preseason schedule, so before locking in any Falcons vs. Broncos picks for the 2019 NFL Hall of Fame Game, you’ll want to see what SportsLine expert R.J. White is saying.

White has been SportsLine’s top pro football analyst for two-plus seasons. Over that span, the CBS Sports NFL editor and nationally recognized NFL Draft expert has gone 214-164 on NFL picks against the spread, returning over $3,200 to $100 bettors.

The last time White made a pick on a NFL game, it was the 2019 Super Bowl. White was all over the Patriots, nailing the year’s biggest sporting event for the legions that follow him. White said he wouldn’t trust Rams QB Jared Goff in a big spot, and Goff’s bumbling performance was key to New England’s 13-3 win. Falcons vs Broncos

The stats guru, whose picks are coveted by fans everywhere, has cashed huge in the world’s most prestigious handicapping tournament, the Westgate Las Vegas SuperContest, twice in the past four years. Anyone who has followed him is way up.

Now, White has analyzed the rosters and made his pick for Broncos vs. Falcons in the 2019 Hall of Fame Game. We can tell you he’s leaning under, but his most confident pick is against the spread. He’s only sharing that pick at SportsLine.

White knows it’s a new year for the Broncos. After finishing 6-10 and seeing their top-ranked defense in 2017 morph into the No. 22 unit last year, the team jettisoned coach Vance Joseph after two seasons and traded starting quarterback Case Keenum to Washington. Falcons vs Broncos

They didn’t replace their coach or starting quarterback with youth, either. The new head coach is Vic Fangio, who has more than three decades of NFL coaching experience. And the new starting QB is Joe Flacco, an 11-year starter with the Ravens and a Super Bowl champion. Flacco won’t see the field, so all eyes will be on rookie second-round pick Drew Lock, who could get an extended look. Lock will be out to make a strong impression for his new coach, while Atlanta is 0-8 in its last two preseasons and apparently doesn’t put much stock in winning exhibitions.

Falcons vs Broncos But just because Denver may have added motivation with Fangio at the helm doesn’t mean it’s the best value on the Falcons vs. Broncos money line.

While also knows Atlanta finished just 7-9 and missed out on the playoffs last year, but former offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter is back in that role following three seasons as head coach of the Buccaneers. Koetter will get a long look at backup quarterbacks Matt Schaub and Kurt Benkert on Thursday, as well as the depth of an offensive line that was revamped after allowing 42 sacks of Matt Ryan last year.

Atlanta was ravaged by injuries on both sides of the ball last year, but is healthy for the NFL Hall of Fame Game 2019. The Falcons have historically played their starters just one series in their preseason opener, but the team has only six rookies on its second and third strings. While Denver works out the kinks with a new head coach, the Falcons could hit Canton sharper out of the gate.

White has broken down the depth charts of both teams and unearthed the critical factor that makes one side of the spread a must-back. He’s only sharing what it is, and who to back, at SportsLine.

televised on NBC, will mark the first of 65 exhibition contests leading up to the campaign and it’s one that fans will not want to miss. Pigskins bettors should certainly be paying attention, as the Hall of Fame Game represents the first opportunity to gamble on the NFL since the Super Bowl. While the on-field product tonight may not be as thrilling or meaningful as the action will be starting in September when the games start to count, it’s still a breath of fresh air after a long offseason.

Sportsbooks are offering a variety of ways to wager on the 2019 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game, starting with the basic point spread and total bets. The current line for this Falcons vs. Broncos matchup is DEN -3, which has shifted significantly off the open of ATL -1.5. A healthy majority of the public betting slips, 59% to be precise, are backing the Broncos to cover in this Canton, Ohio-based contest. Denver is drawing more money as well, with 72% of all cash wagered on the Hall of Fame Game on that side, which helps to explain the adjustment in odds since they were first put up on the board. The total for this game hasn’t moved much off the opening mark of 34.5 points, dropping down slightly to 34 even though 52% of tickets and 62% of public dollars are on the over.

It’s never easy to bet on the NFL, let alone the first preseason game of the season. Because the outcome doesn’t truly matter and teams almost always use these early exhibition contests to evaluate players on the fringes of their training camp rosters, it can be tough to pin down exactly how the action on the field will shake out. Fortunately for readers, pro handicapper Jon Price of SportsInformationTraders.com has provided his take on Thursday night’s Hall of Fame Game. The Broncos and the Falcons have appeared four times each in the annual preseason game, which dates back to 1962. The Eagles have also played in the Hall of Fame game four times, most recently in 2006, where the Jeff Garcia-led Birds lost to the Oakland Raiders, 16-10. Denver Broncos vs Atlanta Falcons

One quirk of playing in the Hall of Fame game is that both the Broncos and the Falcons will end up playing five exhibition games, since the match-up is scheduled a week before the league’s four-week preseason begins. As a result, many starters aren’t expected to see the field at all Thursday night, including Falcons receiver Julio Jones, who told reporters he won’t play during the preseason. Denver Broncos vs Atlanta Falcons

Calling the game will be longtime play-by-play announcer Al Michaels, returning for his 13th season with NBC and his 34th season as the voice of the NFL’s top primetime package. Joining Michaels will be longtime analyst and self-professed Eagles Cris Collinsworth and sideline reporter Michele Tafoya. Denver Broncos vs Atlanta Falcons

In addition to Thursday’s game, NBC will also air an Aug. 25 preseason match-up between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tennessee Titans. That game takes place the third week of the preseason, so viewers can expect to see most starters on the field through at least the first quarter.

Media coverage
NBC10 will air two specials ahead of the game. Eagles Year in Review will air at 7 p.m., followed by the network’s 2019 Eagles season preview at 7:30 p.m.

NBC’s telecast of Thursday’s preseason game will feature interviews with several members of this year’s Pro Football Hall of Fame class. 2019 NFL Hall of Fame Game Quotes
Denver head coach Vic Fangio confirmed that offseason acquisition Joe Flacco will not see any action in this contest, as the first-year coach is instead opting to start projected second-stringer Kevin Hogan with plans to bring in rookie second-round draft pick Drew Lock after (via DenverPost.com):

Broncos vs Falcons Live We’re going to go with Kevin to begin with, and then Drew is going to follow him and then (Brett Rypien) is going to follow him.

Broncos quarterback Drew Lock said he’ll be looking to play smart, clean football when he gets on the field for the first time as a rookie during the Hall of Fame Game (via DenverPost.com): Broncos vs Falcons Live

It’s obviously not the 1s that are going to go out and play this game. There will be a lot of young guys, a lot of draft picks, a lot of couple-year guys — the juices will be flowing, people will be riled up, but let’s calm down, let’s show we can drive down the field, be crisp, be smart, no penalties before the snap — be a really clean quarterback that doesn’t force the ball downfield, that can check it down and keep moving the sticks.

Falcons head coach Dan Quinn said he’ll be using the Hall of Fame Game to keep close tabs on the practice squad players that have been with the organization since last year’s preseason, as well as the rookies on the roster (via AJC.com):

It’s really important for the rookies. We’ve got an advantage that thirty teams don’t have, where they get really good game experience. Of course, it’s a really important day for the 25 or so rookies. To me, the development players, guys that we really spent a lot of time on last year, the Matt Gonos of the world, Kurt Benkerts, who it’s like, ‘Man, we’ve put a good 13 months into him, let’s see where we’re at.’

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan gave insight into his role during Thursday night’s contest will be after it was confirmed he would not be participating on the field (via AJC.com): Broncos vs Falcons Live

You help out where you can with some of the younger guys. Whether it’s things that you see that are going on or those kinds of things, you want everybody to go out there and be successful. For me, it’ll also be a really special week. One of my best friends, good friends [Tony Gonzalez] is getting inducted into the Hall of Fame. I’ll enjoy that part of it, too. I’m appreciative that we’re the team that’s going to be up there and to be able to see him a little bit prior to the enshrinement on Saturday. So, I’m excited for him, excited for this game for our young guys. It’s going to be a fun couple of days.

Manager Brandon Hyde, right, has his Baltimore Orioles playing their best ball of the season. The team that Hyde is leading, however, could look markedly different after Thursday’s trade deadline. (Photo: Gail Burton, AP) San Diego vs Baltimore

Even as the Orioles enjoy their best baseball of the season, winning seven of their past 11 games and narrowly missing their first sweep of the season Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels, manager Brandon Hyde is more than aware of how quickly things can change with Wednesday’s trade deadline. San Diego vs Baltimore

San Diego vs Baltimore Many of the guiding forces in the Orioles’ recent success are among their top candidates to be moved. They still hold one of the majors’ weakest records at 35-70, so the roster they have when ending their nine-game road trip Tuesday could be massively different from the one Hyde can use when they start a 10-game homestand Thursday. San Diego vs Baltimore

“I think we’ll handle it fine,” Hyde said Sunday. “For me, it’s not a secret that things might happen. I think we’re all prepared for something to happen. We’ve all been around enough. We all understand it’s a part of the game, and whoever’s in the clubhouse after the deadline, we’re gonna give the same attention to.”

Hyde knows the club he’s managing might lose some of its top performers, many of whom have been enjoying their best stretches of the season as the Orioles do the same. The injured Mark Trumbo is team’s only pending free agent after trading Andrew Cashner to the Boston Red Sox, but that doesn’t mean others are forbidden from being moved. San Diego vs Baltimore

San Diego vs Baltimore U NDER TEAM CONTROL THROUGH 2020:

Middle infielder Jonathan Villar: Villar struggled in the Orioles’ series loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, going hitless in 15 at-bats with seven strikeouts. He turned it around in Anaheim with multi-hit games in each leg of the four-game set. In the series, Villar went 10-for-18 with five steals in as many tries and two home runs, the first of those being a game-winning, two-run shot in the 16th inning of Thursday’s marathon.

UNDER TEAM CONTROL THROUGH 2021: San Diego vs Baltimore

Closer Mychal Givens: Despite allowing runs in his past three outings, Givens has a 3.00 ERA in his past 16 appearances, striking out 27 in 18 innings in that span. Because of the lack of other experienced options in the Orioles bullpen, he’s been overused at times, but from May 31 to July 21, he had a 1.84 ERA in 13 appearances while limiting opponents to a .140 batting average. San Diego vs Baltimore

Right-handed starter Dylan Bundy: Any possibility of Bundy being traded seemed eradicated when he allowed seven runs in one inning July 12 and was thereafter placed on the injured list with knee tendinitis. But he allowed four runs in his first 11 innings off the IL before Albert Pujols spoiled his second start with a game-tying home run in Sunday’s sixth inning. Bundy has two more years of control after this year, so an offseason deal might be more likely. San Diego vs Baltimore

UNDER TEAM CONTROL THROUGH 2022: San Diego vs Baltimore

Outfielder/first baseman Trey Mancini: Since ending an 0-for-24 skid July 16, Mancini has homered seven times in his past 11 games, with two multi-homer outputs and his first career streak of three consecutive games with a home run. He’s driven in 13 runners in those 10 games.

Infielder Hanser Alberto: Alberto leads the majors with a .404 batting average against left-handed pitching. Going from changing organizations four times this offseason to a fixture in Hyde’s lineup, Alberto is among the American League’s top hitters overall at .313, a mark boosted by hitting .458 (11-for-24) this week.

UNDER TEAM CONTROL THROUGH 2023:

Catcher Pedro Severino: Severino became the first Oriole since 1999 with consecutive four-hit games, with his four RBIs in the latter contest Saturday matching his career high. He was the first AL catcher with four hits, four RBIs and a steal since 2007, when Ram\u00f3n Hern\u00e1ndez did it for the Orioles.

UNDER TEAM CONTROL THROUGH 2024:

Designated hitter/infielder Renato Nunez: Nunez leads the Orioles with 25 home runs. Nine have come in his past 23 games, a span in which he has slugged .698 with half of his hits going for extra bases. He’s also been playing in the field more often of late after primarily serving as the Orioles’ designated hitter before this road trip.

GENERAL OVERVIEW:

What’s to come? Fresh off their first sweep of the season, the Orioles complete their road trip west with two games against Manny Machado and the San Diego Padres. The Orioles lost both matchups with the Padres at Camden Yards in June, though the Orioles are playing significantly better than they were then and the Padres are playing worse. A deadline day off precedes a return to Camden Yards to start a 10-game homestand with four against the Toronto Blue Jays.

What was good? Despite all of the strong performances referenced above, Anthony Santander occupies this space this week. He recorded hits in all but one game this week, with multiple hits in four of them, with the increased output coming since the Orioles designated Keon Broxton and made Santander a permanent part of their center field mix. Hyde said after Saturday’s victory that Santander has “a chance to be a special hitter,” and the 25-year-old switch-hitter has shown that potential since June 28. Playing in all 25 of the Orioles’ games in that span, Santander has hit .327 with a .574 slugging percentage while the Orioles have gone 13-12, their best 25-game stretch of the year.

What wasn’t? Chris Davis’ pursuit and subsequent avoidance of a .200 batting average continued in extreme fashion this week. He ended last week with a three-game hitting streak and his average at .192, the highest it’s been after a game since the end of the 2017 season. But his 13 plate appearances this week featured 10 strikeouts, a walk and no hits as his average dropped to .181. The strikeouts left him with 101 in 252 plate appearances, the fewest of any player with at least 100 strikeouts. Nunez started at first over Davis three times during the week, including Sunday against right-hander Felix Pena, as Davis’ up-and-down 2019 continues.

On the farm: Right-hander Dean Kremer is not putting up the strikeout numbers that made him the minor leagues’ leader in the stat a year ago, but he’s proving effective nonetheless. The product of the Manny Machado trade has a 3.02 ERA in 12 starts with Double-A Bowie after pitching six shutout innings Wednesday, his second straight scoreless start. Kremer is part of a Baysox rotation that has the Eastern League’s top three leaders in ERA in Alex Wells, Zac Lowther and Bruce Zimmermann — who was promoted to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday — plus 2016 top pick Cody Sedlock and Mike Baumann, who threw a no-hitter July 16.

The Friars came out of the gate swinging, as Fernando Tatis Jr. smacked his 18th home run of the season — a 400-footer — on the game’s very first pitch. Franmil Reyes joined the party and followed up with his own 433-foot dinger — on the very next pitch.

The Padres never looked back. San Diego went on to post five dingers on the night to tie a franchise record for the most homers in a game. Eric Hosmer had himself a two-homer night, while Luis Urías notched his first major league long ball of 2019. San Diego Padres vs Baltimore Orioles Live Stream

It was truly a team effort with every starter but Hunter Renfroe recording a hit. Wil Myers made a fantastic play on defense to quash an Orioles rally in the sixth, and the bullpen did its job; Andres Muñoz pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, while Robbie Erlin finished the game with three strikeouts and no runs allowed.

Chris Paddack had a strong outing as well, throwing 5.1 innings and giving up only one run off three hits. He recorded five strikeouts and walked two batters. San Diego Padres vs Baltimore Orioles Live Stream

Paddack officially hit 100 innings on the season and has a 2.78 ERA and 0.897 WHIP. To say the rookie’s been impressive would be a massive understatement. He has a long, bright future ahead of him and he’s earned his spot on the Padres rotation.
